ENG – Depth of focus is for me first and foremost a family story and the description of a path, that of the healing of the heart and the appeasement of the soul.

Depth of focus is the story of Travis, a young Native American student who, following the death of his mother, must return to his hometown, which he has very little fond memories of, to take care of Caitlyn, his little sister who took her mother’s death very badly and tried to put an end to her life. It is also the story of Whitman, a thirty-something Canadian who has just moved to the small town of Slat Creek to replace the recently retired bookseller. Out of a little bit toxic relationship and always wanted to know about life in a small town, Whitman will take under his wing young Caitlyn and fall for his brother. All three go to the sandstone of the months to advance on the way of the reconstruction.

I had a lot of fun following the course of our 3 heroes. I say three because even though the book is written from the point of view of Travis and Whitman, Caitlyn and her story really an important part in the story and wanted to see as much as the evolution of the relationship between the two men.

Mourning has a very important part in this new title of JD Chambers, and the author has really done a quality writing job. We really feel the loss of the two orphans and it reigns a heavy atmosphere in a good part of the title. As if the death of their mother was a full-fledged character of the book, always present, but never there. I also appreciated that the author transforms on the pages, the loss of a tragic event to an almost positive fact where we celebrate and remember the one who has left us.

Although the story revolves around the loss of Travis and Caitlyn, Whitman also has its share of history and does not serve to help the two bereaved. Whitman comes out of a relationship that I might describe as toxic, his former companion not finally accepting him for what he is and having gradually tried to shape him into someone else. It is also a person who, although enjoying the benefits of big cities, has always wanted to know the solidarity and soul of small towns. I really liked the way that the author told us, the appeasement of the bookseller, his integration into the small town, and his discovery of the love and family feeling he sought and coveted all his life.

The three central characters touched me. Each in their own way, but none left me indifferent. The author even managed to make me appreciate a character towards the end of his novel and leaving me impatient to read a volume 2 of his series that would be centered on this character who really had to have a shitty life and who really needs someone to help him to rebuild himself and to know the love and the joys of the family. I told you that in the end depth of focus was a family story, and in addition, one of quality.
