Comment allez vous? Pour ma part, ça va très bien. Je vous retrouve aujourd’hui pour la chronique d’un roman dont le thème m’a tout de suite fait de l’oeil quand j’ai lu le résumé. Il s’agit d’un roman en auto édition d’une auteure que je ne connaissais pas du tout et que j’ai découverte avec plaisir. Résumé:

What happens when you fall for the one person you can’t have?

Ryan has had seventeen years of being compared to Cody, part of his toxic fractured family, so you’ll forgive him for some epic eye-rolling when it comes to Mr Perfect. Although not related to him by blood, Cody has always been annoying background noise in Ryan’s life. It doesn’t help that Cody’s a high achieving musician, while Ryan’s life ambition doesn’t extend past catching the next wave.

One summer changes everything. It’s the summer when circumstances collide, and Cody and Ryan end up spending time together at Cody’s family’s beach house. It’s the summer Ryan teaches Cody to surf and Cody teaches Ryan to play guitar. It’s the summer when they become friends.

And then more than friends.

But when summer ends, Cody and Ryan are forced back to reality, where they must hide their relationship from their warring family members. And as tragedy strikes and family secrets buried deep in the past worm their way to the surface, their relationship is threatened. Can their feelings, which began in the summer sun, survive the winter ahead?

FR- Alors alors… alors j’ai énormément aimé ce roman. Je l’avais demandé courant décembre en me disant que le thème me plaisait beaucoup mais il est resté dormir dans ma PAL un bon moment. Pour autant je l’ai dévoré une fois commencé et je l’ai lu en une après midi. J’avais en tête le roman Rock d’Anyta Sunday. Forcément. Et hormis le fait que les deux romans concernent des ados et se passent en Nouvelle Zélande c’est un peu le seul point commun.
L’histoire est racontée exclusivement du point de vue de Ryan. C’est un personnage que j’ai beaucoup aimé. Il est vraiment chouette, j’aime beaucoup sa relation avec ses soeurs qui est peut être totalement à l’opposée de celle que Cody entretient avec elles mais qui est tout aussi forte et touchante. On sent la difficulté pour Ryan d’être à la hauteur de cet autre frère qui semble parfait et j’ai vraiment trouvé chouette que dès le début, Ryan reste correct avec lui même quand il aurait pu en profiter.

J’ai beaucoup aimé la plume de l’auteure. J’ai trouvé les personnages très justes et j’ai aimé découvrir Cody à travers les yeux de Ryan. Il se rend vite compte que la vie de Cody n’est pas forcément aussi rose qu’il aurait pu le penser. On sent que les tensions entre la mère de Ryan et le père de Cody sont vraiment au centre de leur famille recomposée. J’ai aimé ce thème et la façon dont l’auteure va traiter de la dynamique de cette famille atypique.

La relation entre Ryan et Cody est vraiment touchante, j’ai beaucoup aimé qu’ils apprennent à se connaitre et la force de leur amour l’un pour l’autre. J’ai versé ma petite larme plusieurs fois dans le roman. On sent que le désir de plaire à ses parents, de ne pas les décevoir est très important pour Cody et Ryan ne peut que subir les conséquences de leurs décisions.

J’ai beaucoup aimé aussi la façon dont Ryan va grandir, murir et se rendre compte de ses défauts au contact de Cody et de ses amis. La réaction de ses parents quand il annonce son choix de carrière lui fait un sacré coup. J’ai trouvé assez dure leur réaction mais Ryan ne se laisse pas abattre et fait ce qu’il faut pour changer.

En résumé un roman Young Adult comme je les aime. Je l’ai déjà dit mille fois mais l’adolescence est vraiment une période que j’aime beaucoup qui est très très bien traitée par l’auteure. Une lecture que j’ai adoré et que je vous recommande fortement.

ENG- So well well well… well I really liked this novel. I asked for it in December, telling me that I liked the theme a lot, but it stayed sleeping in my PAL for a long time. However, I devoured it once started and I read it in one afternoon. I had in mind the novel Rock of Anyta Sunday. Necessarily. And apart from the fact that the two novels concern teenagers and take place in New Zealand, it is a bit the only thing in common.
The story is told exclusively from Ryan’s perspective. He’s a character that I really liked. He is really cool, I really like his relationship with his sisters which is maybe totally the opposite of the one Cody has with them but which is just as strong and touching. We feel the difficulty for Ryan to live up to this other brother who seems perfect and I found it really nice that from the start, Ryan remains correct with himself even when he could have taken advantage of it.

I really liked the author’s pen. I found the characters to be very fair and I enjoyed seeing Cody through Ryan’s eyes. He soon realizes that Cody’s life isn’t necessarily as rosy as he might have thought. We feel that the tensions between Ryan’s mother and Cody’s father are really at the center of their blended family. I liked this theme and the way the author will deal with the dynamics of this atypical family.

The relationship between Ryan and Cody is really touching, I really liked that they got to know each other and the strength of their love for each other. I shed my little tear several times in the novel. We feel that the desire to please his parents, not to disappoint them is very important for Cody and Ryan can only suffer the consequences of their decisions.

I also really liked the way Ryan will grow, mature and realize his flaws in contact with Cody and his friends. The reaction of his parents when he announces his career choice is quite a blow to him. I found their reaction quite harsh, but Ryan doesn’t give in and does whatever it takes to change.

In short, a Young Adult novel as I like them. I have said it a thousand times before, but adolescence is really a period that I really like which is treated very very well by the author. A reading that I loved and highly recommend.
