ENG- So well well well… well I must admit that even several days after I finish reading this novel, I still do not know if I liked it or not. Yes it is part of these novels there. All in all, this novel deals with a subject I like to read and I had no real difficulty in reading my novel. I read it in a few days and the idea of giving up my reading did not touch my mind.
I found the main characters endearing and touching and I really enjoyed their story.
I liked the context in which the story unfolds and the setting is simply beautiful. The author takes the time to ask things, everything is done smoothly and in sensitivity and it’s definitely a very nice story.
So, tell me, why am I still unable to say whether I liked this novel or not? First of all, there are two things that really disturbed me during my reading and that made it hard for me to really get into the novel.
The first is minor but the author speaks of the sky and the sun to the feminine … not neutral. And in English it’s rather disturbing.
The second one that has bothered me a lot is the fact that the novel is written in the present tense. And that really disturbed me. Layout made it difficult to distinguish dialogues from narration, which is often the case in novels, but the fact that narration is in the present makes the distinction between the two even more delicate. I understand that it can give the story a more active, more direct but personally it has hindered me a lot.
What I found surprising also is that we are on a slice of life. So I know that mental illnesses do not heal in a snap but I would have liked answers. Many questions are asked in this novel, whether it is in the relationship between Reid and his parents or even and that of Reid and Joaquim. So yes we can imagine what we want for them, the author leaves us free about it but I do not like open ends, I have the impression that the author has done only the half of his job. And in this novel in particular, the epilogue, which takes place a few days after the end of the novel and for once, brings nothing strictly to history.
In summary, a slice of life in a difficult moment for Reid, a light brought by Joaquim but I was expecting a novel and not a short enough moment in the life of a young cyclothymic man. A nice story but which could have been more thorough.
