Just Like That de Cole McCade

j’espère que vous allez bien. Pour ma part ça va très bien, c’est bientôt les vacances et si je suis à jour (tout juste) dans mes lectures, je suis un peu à la bourre pour mes chroniques. Du coup celle ci sortira cet après midi au lieu de ce matin .. je suis carrément en flux tendu. Il s’agit de Just Like That de Cole McCade sorti chez Carina Press:

FR- Alors alors… alors j’avais hâte de lire ce roman d’autant plus qu’il est écrit par un auteur queer et noir… quelle n’a pas été ma déception de lire que les personnages sont un blanc et un métisse blanc japonais… pour le coté OwnVoice, on repassera. (Petite note d’humour dans la situation actuelle)

Le résumé me tentait énormément et j’avais envie de découvrir cet auteur dont je n’avais lu aucun roman jusque là. J’ai lu ce roman très rapidement et je ne peux pas dire que je n’ai pas aimé… Mais je ne peux pas dire que j’ai aimé non plus.. Je suis assez mitigée par cette lecture, aussi je vais commencer par les points négatifs pour finir par le positif.

Je n’ai pas du tout aimé la façon dont l’auteur va traiter le fait que Fox va appréhender sa relation avec Summer. En fait, il ne l’appréhende pas. Mais alors pas du tout. On a affaire à un homme dont on ne sait rien de la sexualité , veuf d’une épouse décédée 20 ans plus tôt, d’un age indéterminé mais qui va partir à la retraite de sa carrière de professeur, (à priori le même age que la mère de Summer, mais aucune indication n’est donnée sur l’age de Fox à aucun moment du roman, alors qu’on sait que Summer a entre 24 et 26 ans) Un homme qui n’a connu aucune relation depuis le décès de sa femme et qui, lorsque Summer l’embrasse pour la première fois n’est pas du tout dérangé par le fait que Summer soit un mec. Ajoutez à ça le fait qu’il soit à demi japonais, qu’il ai grandit au Japon jusqu’à ses 16 ans et qu’à plusieurs reprises dans le roman soit mentionné le fait qu’il a une culture japonaise presque plus forte que sa culture américaine…je trouve que ça fait beaucoup. A aucun moment il ne va se poser de question sur le fait que Summer soit un garçon, ou plus jeune, ou son ancien élève.. Non sa seule limite va être le fait qu’il ne veuille plus souffrir et donc ne veuille pas retomber amoureux. Et ne parlons pas de la première scène de sexe entre les deux… où Fox ne se pose aucune question et sait tout de suite comment faire(préparation tout ça tout ça… par contre ils ne se caressent pas et ne se font pas non plus de fellation avant de coucher ensemble… et toujours aucun doute n’assaille Fox…)

Apres c’est peut être un parti prit de personne hétéro, peut être que je m’attendais à voir le traitement habituel du « est il gay? Suis je gay? » assez courant dans les romans du genre, mais personnellement ça m’a gênée.

En fait, c’est tout pour les points négatifs. Il n’y en a qu’un seul, mais un gros qui fait que ce roman ne sera qu’un trois coeurs pour moi.

Pour les points positifs, la plume de l’auteur est très agréable. C’est à la fois poétique et très terre à terre, très réel, très ancré dans la réalité. J’ai bien aimé les personnages (à part le point sus mentionné) et j’ai aimé que ce soit Summer qui soit à l’origine de leur relation et qui soit le plus « actif » quand à la poursuite de leur histoire.

J’ai trouvé que le rythme de l’histoire était interessant tout comme le cheminement que vont faire les deux personnages l’un avec l’autre, que ce soit au niveau de leur relation mais également à un niveau personnel. La romance est belle, les thèmes abordés le sont de manière juste et touchante et le tout est très poétique et vraiment très agréable à lire.

Je reste définitivement curieuse de cet auteur que je m’empresserai de lire à nouveau.

ENG- So well well well… well the summary tempted me enormously and I wanted to discover this author of which I had not read any novel until then. I read this novel very quickly and I cannot say that I did not like … But I cannot say that I liked either .. I am rather mixed by this reading, also I will start with the negative points to finish with the positive.

I did not like at all the way the author will treat the fact that Fox will apprehend his relation with Summer. In fact, he does not apprehend it. But then not at all. We are dealing with a man of whom we know nothing about sexuality, widower of a wife who died 20 years earlier, of an undetermined age but who is going to retire from his teaching career, (a priori the same age as Summer’s mother, but no indication is given of Fox’s age at any point in the novel, when it is known that Summer is between 24 and 26 years old) A man who has had no relationship since death of his wife and who, when Summer kisses him for the first time is not at all bothered by the fact that Summer is a guy. Add to that the fact that he is half Japanese, that he grew up in Japan until his 16 years and that several times in the novel is mentioned the fact that he has an almost stronger Japanese culture than his American culture … I think it’s a lot. At no time is there going to be any question about whether Summer is a boy, or younger, or his former pupil. No, his only limit is going to be the fact that he no longer wants to suffer and therefore does not want to fall back lover. And let’s not talk about the first sex scene between the two … where Fox does not ask any questions and knows immediately how to do (preparation all that … however they do not caress and do no fellatio either before sleeping together … and still no doubt for Fox …)

Then maybe it was a bias on a straight person, maybe I expected to see the usual treatment of « is he gay? Am I gay? » quite common in genre novels, but personally it bothered me.

In fact, that’s it for the negatives. There is only one, but a big one that makes this novel will be only three hearts for me.

For the positive, the author’s pen is very pleasant. It is both poetic and very down to earth, very real, very grounded in reality. I liked the characters (apart from the point mentioned above) and I liked that it was Summer who was at the origin of their relationship and who was the most « active » when pursuing their story.

I found that the pace of the story was interesting as well as the journey that the two characters will make with each other, whether at the level of their relationship but also on a personal level. The romance is beautiful, the themes tackled are just and touching and the whole is very poetic and very pleasant to read.

I am definitely curious about this author whom I will hasten to read again.
