Comment allez vous? Je sais pas vous mais perso ce mois de novembre n’en fini plus.. on est le 18 novembre, ressenti 84 novembre…. vivement décembre et la Ycon. Je vous retrouve aujourd’hui avec la chronique de l’ARC du dernier roman d’Alice Winters, que je remercie pour l’envoi. Il s’agit du premier tome d’une nouvelle série intitulée Mischief et Mayhem. Résumé tout de suite de ce tome 1 : Monstrous Intent.

It’s really hard to pretend like life is normal when you’re staring a monster in the eyes, though he’s both tempting and irritating in his human form. I put my days as a hunter behind me, unable to cope with the death and pain anymore, to become an upstanding citizen and for what? To assist Lake, a man who claims he’s not a monster but keeps talking about me like I’m edible and–even worse–wants to woo me? Between my old organization trying to pull me in and Lake proving that things aren’t quite what they seem, I’m dragged back into this world of fighting the things that humans fear the most.

The human is exquisite. The first moment he told me he was going to hunt me down, I felt my heart burst. He’s beautiful, sassy, angry, and going to be mine (even if he thinks he can refuse my charms). But what Declan doesn’t know about me is that there’s a reason I’m hiding as a human among monster hunters. And while he definitely doesn’t know why, he’s willing to work with me because the people around us strangely want Declan and me dead at the end of this (I mean, who would want to kill us? We’re amazing).
But honestly… what’s more fun than dragging a hunter off to the dark side?

FR- Alors alors… alors je dois avouer qu’au début de ma lecture, ce n’était pas gagné. LA marque de fabrique des romans d’Alice Winters, c’est l’humour. Des personnages totalement loufoques qui en font beaucoup… et parfois trop à mon gout. Ca été le cas avec la série VRC dont je n’ai d’ailleurs lu que 2 tomes.
La bonne première partie de ce roman m’a fait craindre le pire. Tout simplement parce Lake était vraiment très très très très… très… lourd. Alors « lourd » n’est pas vraiment le terme mais il a commencé à me saouler avec ses blagues…Je pensais vraiment ne pas finir ma lecture mais au bout d’un moment.. ca s’est clairement calmé pour devenir bien plus supportable. Et au final j’ai vraiment apprécié ma lecture.

J’ai beaucoup aimé l’univers proposé par l’auteure. J’avais un peu de mal à visualiser les Chimères qui ont donc envahit notre monde, mais ce n’est pas si important que ça pour le reste de l’histoire.

J’ai énormément aimé le personnage de Declan qui est vraiment chouette. Il essaye de faire le maximum pour retrouver une vie normale mais ne tourne pas le dos à ses responsabilités et va aller jusqu’au bout de ce qu’il pense juste. Le personnage féminin de Emma est vraiment sympa et j’ai beaucoup aimé la direction que prend ce personnage dans la deuxieme partie du roman.

Lake donc se calme dans la deuxieme partie du roman et devient un peu plus sérieux tout en gardant des moments drôles. Sa relation avec Declan est longue à se mettre en place mais on en savoure que plus la montée en puissance de leurs sentiments respectifs.

Je suis assez partagée avec ce roman. C’est un premier tome et l’auteure prend le temps de poser l’univers et les personnages. Pour moi il y a clairement un tournant dans le roman au moment où l’intrigue commence vraiment à se mettre en place et où tous les personnages deviennent meilleurs. Moins délirants, moins clichés, et plus profond. Je lirai avec plaisir le deuxième tome de cette série pour voir si Alice Winters reste sur sa lancée, en espérant que ça soit le cas.

ENG – So well well well … well I must admit that at the beginning of my reading, I wasn’t all in. THE trademark of Alice Winters’ novels is humor. Totally wacky characters who do a lot of silly things… and sometimes too much for my taste. This was the case with the VRC series, of which I have only read 2 volumes.

The good first part of this novel made me fear the worst. Simply because Lake was really very very very very… very… heavy. So « heavy » isn’t really the term but he started pissing me off with his jokes…I really thought I wouldn’t finish my reading but after a while.. it clearly calmed down to become more bearable for me. And in the end I really enjoyed my reading.

I really liked the universe proposed by the author. I had a little trouble visualizing the Chimeras that have invaded our world, but it’s not that important for the rest of the story.

I really liked the character of Declan who is really cool. He tries to do his best to find a normal life but does not turn his back on his responsibilities and will go to the end of what he thinks is right. The female character of Emma is really nice and I really liked the direction that this character takes in the second part of the novel.

Lake therefore calms down in the second part of the novel and becomes a little more serious while keeping funny moments. His relationship with Declan takes a long time to set up but we savor the rise in power of their respective feelings.

I’m pretty torn with this novel. This is a first volume and the author takes the time to lay out the universe and the characters. For me there is definitely a turning point in the novel when the plot really starts to come together and all the characters get better. Less crazy, less clichéd, and deeper. I will happily read the second book in this series to see if Alice Winters stays on track, hoping that this is the case.
